The French War-Chest is Stolen

The year is 1796. The French have occupied Germany and are moving towards the Siegen area. At 9 a.m. on 2nd July the first French soldiers arrive in Freudenberg and loot the town. At around midday they leave for Siegen

The French are defeated near Würzburg and have to retreat.

A herald of the returning French troops, their war-chest, consisting of 16 fully loaded carriages, travels through the Siegen area. Around midday on 8th September the caravan, badly guarded by only 30 men, is attacked by robbers. The caravan is then taken to Freudenberg where it is guarded overnight by citizens of Freudenberg.
