The French War-Chest is Stolen

Thereupon, our French friend from the hospital joins in and tells his countrymen that the theft was committed by peasants from the surrounding villages. At last, he too was the centre of attention. He had always wanted to be given the freedom to a town so it suited his purposes that he was able to save the town. Apart from this, he had also fallen madly in love with a nurse. If he had known that she was already spoken for, Freudenberg would probably not be here today. But luckily he didn’t know...

So the French trudge off again. Two days later (the French hate Mondays, too), they return with 400 soldiers, take their wounded comrades from the hospital and set off to burn down the surrounding villages. In the afternoon they return to recuperate. Then they set off for Siegen for the last time.
